The Peter Swann Photography Competition

Submissions are now OPEN for Optometry Clinical Conference (OCC) delegates

The Professor Peter Swann Photography Competition honours the legacy of Professor Peter Swann, who was a faculty member at Queensland University of Technology (QUT) for over 37 years and a visiting professor in the optometry school at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. His commitment and enthusiasm to the profession had a tremendous impact on the generations of students he taught and mentored. He was also acknowledged and respected as an expert on ocular diseases and clinical methods of eye examination.

‍The competition celebrates clinical excellence and photographic skill in optometry by recognising outstanding ocular photography submitted by association members.

‍The winner receives:

  • ‍ A $1000 cash prize

  • Recognition of the Award across OQNT/OA’s communication channels

‍The competition is owned and organised by Optometry Queensland Northern Territory (OQNT).‍ ‍

How to Enter‍ ‍

In 2026, the Peter Swann Photography Prize will be presented at the Optometry Clinical Conference in Brisbane, 9-10th August. The competition is open to all OQNT members, as well as conference delegates who may be Optometry Australia members of other divisions.

‍Photographs must be clinical or ocular in nature and may be captured using:

  • ‍ ‍Slit lamp

  • ‍ ‍Retinal camera

  • ‍ ‍Scanning laser ophthalmoscope

  • ‍ ‍Slit lamp with condensing lens

  • ‍ ‍Smartphone

  • ‍ ‍Macro photography of lids or orbit

Each entry must be accompanied by a brief written description (maximum 50 words) including:

  • Clinical context of the image

  • Device used to capture the image

‍ Entrants must ensure all images comply with patient consent and privacy requirements.

‍The competition will open on Wednesday 20th May and close at 11:59pm Sunday 5th July.

Professor Swann’s commitment and enthusiasm to the profession had a tremendous impact on the generations of students he taught and mentored. He was a faculty member of the School of Optometry at QUT for over 37 years and was also a visiting Professor in the School of Optometry at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University.

Acknowledged as an expert on diseases of the eye and clinical methods of eye examination, two areas in which he lectured extensively, and was a sought-after and engaging presenter, as well as a highly regarded author.
